Wadi Hitan, or the Valley of Whales, lies within the Wadi El Rayan Protectorate in the El Fayoum region. It is the world’s most significant site for showcasing whale evolution. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Wadi Hitan and Wadi El Rayan are set to become key international ecotourism destinations.
The zeuglodon whale, a 40-million-year-old mammal, once lived in these waters. This whale, averaging 20 meters in length, had an eel-shaped body and saw-edged teeth. In ancient times, the Tethys Sea covered this region. Wadi Hitan served as its southern shore, adding to the rich natural history of El Fayoum.
