This private full-day tour covers three of Aswan's best-known sights. You start at the Aswan High Dam, which controls the flow of the Nile and created Lake Nasser, then visit the Unfinished Obelisk, still lying in the granite quarry where it was carved. It would have been the largest obelisk ever raised, but it was left behind when it cracked during the work. You finish with a short boat ride to the island Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis, which was rescued from the rising water and rebuilt stone by stone on higher ground. A private Egyptologist guide, hotel pickup and an air-conditioned vehicle are included.
Full Day: High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple
Your day starts with a pickup from your Aswan hotel. You first visit the Aswan High Dam, where your guide explains how it controls the flow of the Nile and created Lake Nasser, one of the largest reservoirs in the world. You continue to the Unfinished Obelisk, which lies in the granite quarries where the ancient Egyptians cut their monuments, and hear how it was abandoned when a crack appeared during carving. You then drive to the boat landing and sail a short way to the island Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis, and explore its gateways, courtyards and columned halls on the water. You return by boat and your driver takes you back to your hotel.
