Siwa Oasis, the most secluded in the Western Desert, restricted visitors for nearly two decades until the 1980s. This unique oasis boasts its customs and a rich history. The secretive Siwan Manuscript, inaccessible to outsiders, documents much of this history.
Far from the fertile Nile Valley, some areas of the oasis lie 60 meters below sea level. Southward, the vast Great Sand Sea begins, filled with awe-inspiring desert dunes.
Since the time of the pharaohs, various civilizations have left their marks on Siwa. Greeks, Romans, Persians, and North African societies also contributed to its mystique.
